10.8 mn children in need of humanitarian aid in Ethiopia: UN

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has reported that 10.8 million children in Ethiopia are in need of emergency humanitarian aid in 2024. According to the latest Ethiopia Humanitarian Situation Report, at least 20 million people, including about 10.8 million children, are in need of this aid. Unicef has stated that they require $535 million to address the multiple and growing challenges facing vulnerable populations and to help avert the disastrous consequences of overlapping crises in Ethiopia in 2024.

The funds are necessary for meeting basic food needs, providing reproductive health services, administering vaccinations for children, and supplying clean water for families in need. The Unicef report also warned that the year ahead will continue to bring many challenges to the people of Ethiopia, including new and ongoing drought, conflict, and disease epidemics compounded by increasing food insecurity and forecast flooding events.

Unicef’s call for humanitarian aid highlights the urgent need to address the multiple crises facing Ethiopia, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including children. The organization’s plea for $535 million reflects the scale of the challenges and the resources required to address them effectively.

The report serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia and the urgent need for international support to address it. With millions of children in need of emergency aid, the situation demands immediate attention and action from the global community to prevent further suffering and avert disastrous consequences.
