26/11: The unsung American soldier who saved 157 lives in the Mumbai attack

On 26 November 2008, 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists rocked Mumbai with bombings and shootings. It has been 12 years for this terrorist attack, but it is a dark day in India’s history that no one can forget. More than 160 people were killed and more than 300 people were injured in the attack. People still feel heartbroken by remembering the Mumbai attack. Know what happened that day:

1. Boats from Karachi enter Mumbai: All that has been revealed from the investigation of Mumbai attacks, 10 terrorists entered Mumbai by boat from Karachi. There were four Indians aboard this boat, which were killed by reaching the shore of the sea. It was around 8 o’clock in the night, when the terrorists landed at the fish market of Cuffe Parade. 3. Two terrorists had shot down 52 people to death: About 9:30 pm, there was news of firing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Two terrorists entered the main hall of this historic railway station in Mumbai and started firing indiscriminately. One of them was Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, who has now been hanged. Both had AK 47 rifles in their hands and within fifteen minutes they killed 52 people and injured 109.

Leopold Cafe in South Mumbai was also one of the few places that were the initial targets of this three-day-long attack. It is one of the renowned restaurants in Mumbai, so many foreigners were among the 10 people killed in the shootout there, while many were injured. The bullets, which had been guarding the guests since 1871, had left marks of attack in the walls of the Leopold Cafe. At 10:40 am, a taxi in Vile Parle area was reported to have been bombed in which the driver and a passenger were killed, a taxi driver and two passengers were killed in a similar blast in Boribandar fifteen to twenty minutes earlier. About 15 were also injured.

5. 26/11’s three big fronts: But if the story of terror had ended, the world might not have been as shocked by the Mumbai attacks. The three major fronts of 26/11 were the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, the Oberoi Trident Hotel and the Nariman House. When the attack took place, there were 450 guests at the Taj and 380 at the Oberoi. Especially the smoke emanating from the Taj Hotel building later became the hallmark of the attacks.

6. Live media coverage helped the terrorists: On the next morning of the attacks, on 27 November, news came that all the hostages had been rescued from the Taj, but as the day progressed, the terrorists found some more people hostage. Many foreigners are also involved. Both hotels were surrounded by Railway Protection Force (RPF), The National Security Guard (NSG) commandos during the attacks. While security mechanisms were pulled up for the late arrival of NSG commandos, the live media coverage of the attacks also greatly helped the terrorists. 7. Security forces battling terrorists for 3 consecutive days: For three days, the security forces kept battling terrorists. There were many people present at the hotel at the time of the attack: At the time of the attack, the Taj also included many members of the European Union’s Parliamentary Committee on International Trade, although none of them suffered any damage. When the attacks started, British Member of European Parliament Sajjad Karim was in the Taj lobby, then German MP Erica Mann had to hide away to save her life. Among the people present in Oberoi were many well-known people. These included Indian MP NN Krishnadas, who was having dinner with Sir Ghulam Noon, a prominent British businessman.

9. The terrorists also captured Nariman Point: On the other hand, the two terrorists also captured Nariman Point, the main center of the yahudi’s in Mumbai. Many were held hostage. The NSG commandos then stormed Nariman House and after hours of fighting, the terrorists were wiped out but one of the NSG commandos was also killed. 10. More than 160 people lost their lives: By the morning of 29 November, nine terrorists had been wiped out and one terrorrist as Ajmal Kasab was in police custody. The situation was completely under control but more than 160 people lost their lives.
