27 bulk drug park projects and 13 medical device factories inaugurated as part of PLI scheme

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya virtually inaugurated 27 greenfield bulk drug park projects and 13 greenfield manufacturing plants for medical devices under the PLI scheme. The plants are located across various states, aiming to promote local manufacturing of critical medicines and medical products.

Minister Mandaviya highlighted India’s reduced dependence on imports and emergence as a major exporter due to the success of the PLI scheme. The government’s efforts towards making India self-reliant in critical medicines were emphasized, with plans to bring back the production of Penicillin G after three decades.

The PLI scheme, focused on bringing localization and value addition to the pharma and MedTech industry in India, aims to reduce over-dependence on critical resources from certain regions, hinting at China. The scheme envisions manufacturing 1800 pharmaceutical products and formulations along with 22 bulk drugs in India.

The bulk drug plants inaugurated under the PLI scheme will manufacture 41 bulk drugs with a total outlay of Rs 6,940 crore. Additionally, 26 applicants have been approved for manufacturing medical devices under the PLI scheme with a total financial outlay of Rs 3,420 crore. The scheme is set to boost the drug and pharmaceutical industry in India.
