29 dead, 50 injured in Pakistan due to heavy rainfall

At least 29 people were killed and 50 injured in Pakistan due to heavy rains in the past 48 hours. The rain-triggered landslides blocked roads and caused houses to collapse, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The National Disaster Management Authority is providing emergency relief to the affected areas.

In the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 23 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents since Thursday night. Additionally, five people died in the southwestern Balochistan province due to flooding, with Gwadar town getting flooded and forcing evacuations via boats.

“The heavy rains have caused devastation in various parts of Pakistan, with landslides blocking major highways including the Karakoram Highway linking Pakistan with China,” said a spokesperson for the Gilgit Baltistan region. The authorities have deployed heavy machinery to clear debris and restore connectivity in the affected areas.

Pakistan, despite its minimal carbon emissions contribution, is among the top 10 most vulnerable countries to climate change according to the United Nations. The government is working to address the impacts of extreme weather events and provide relief to those affected by the recent heavy rains and flooding.

Emergency relief efforts are ongoing, with authorities focusing on assisting those in need and restoring essential services in the affected regions. The situation remains challenging as the country grapples with the aftermath of the heavy rains and works towards recovery and rehabilitation for the affected communities.
