Our independence should never be forgotten. It was heroes who stood against the cruel British raj and fought with courage so that we all could have a better future. However, there were many unknown freedom fighters or we can say many ‘Unsung heroes of the freedom struggle’ that stayed in the dark. Here we gonna about 6 such freedom fighters.
6 Unsung heroes of the freedom struggle
1. Senapati Bapat
He got the title of Senapati because he was the leader of Mulshi Satyagraha. He was jailed for speaking in public and vandalism after he turned himself into the army of satyagraha.
2. Matangini Hazra
One of the members of the Quit India Movement along with the Non-Cooperation Movement. During one incident she was shot thrice and still continued to advance the Indian flag and kept shouting “Vande Mataram”.
3. Potti Sreeramulu
An avid devotee as well as a supporter of Mahatma Gandhi. After seeing his dedication to the nation Gandhi once said: “If only I have eleven more followers like Sriramulu, I will win freedom in a year.”
4. Begum Hazrat Mahal
She was an integral part of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. After her husband was expelled from India, she took the throne and seized control of Lucknow during the rebellion. Later, she died in Nepal while retreating.
5. Bhikaji Cama
You must have heard about her because there are numerous roads and buildings named after her around the country. She was an important figure for gender equality. She donated almost all of her assets to an orphanage for girls. In 1907, she unfurled the Indian flag at the International Socialist Conference at Stuttgart in Germany.
6. Aruna Asaf Ali
Not many know about her, she hoisted the Indian National Congress flag during the Quit India Movement at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay, 1942 at merely 33 years old.
