“3 Idiots” is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language starting to come motion picture written, produced, and helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, co-authored by Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film, which is partially based on Chetan Bhagat’s book Five Point Someone, stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in the title roles, signifying their return three years after the 2006 movie Rang De Basanti, as well as Omi Vaidya, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani in crucial roles. The plot chronicles the relationship of three students at an Indian engineering school and is a parody on the social expectations under an Indian education system, as told through simultaneous tragedies based on real events and ten years in the prior.
“Three Idiots” was nominated for six Filmfare Awards, comprising Best Film, and three National Film Awards, comprising Best Popular Film. It was up for Best Outstanding Foreign Language Film at the Japan Academy Awards and Best Foreign Film at China’s Beijing International Film Festival. The movie was translated in Tamil as “Nanban” (2012), which was also critically acclaimed and commercially successful. In 2017, a Mexican adaptation, “3 Idiotas”, was also published.
