It honors those who took part in the 1976 Soweto uprising on that day. On June 16, 1971, more than 20,000 South African students took to the streets in the Soweto settlement, demanding to be taught in their own language. Armed police officers responded by killing hundreds of protesters. There is now a public holiday in South Africa, known as Youth Day, it is also recognized throughout the world as International African Children’s Day.
