Bhanu Jayanti is the celebration of the birth anniversary of Bhanubhakta Acharya. It falls on the 29th day of the month of Ashadha according to the Nepali calendar. It is celebrated every year by Nepali-speaking people across the world. Bhanubhakta Acharya was a Nepali writer, poet, and translator who is generally considered to be the first writer of the Nepali language. The cultural festival is popular among Nepalese around the world in memory of the birth anniversary of Bhanubhakta Acharya. This year also Bhanu Jayanti will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.
According to ujjwalpradesh.com, Bhanubhakta Acharya was born on 13 July 1814 to Dhananjay and Dharmavati in the Tanhun district of Nepal. His father was a government employee. Acharya received his primary education in Sanskrit from his grandfather and higher education in Varanasi. As we earlier told you, Bhanubhakta Acharya is respected as the first poet of the Nepali language, this title was given to Acharya by poet Motiram Bhatt in 1981 in the course of writing the biography of Acharya.
At the time of his death in 1868, he did not know that at some point he would be one of Nepal’s most celebrated poets. His works remained unpublished in his life, due to which he did not get credit for his works at that time. It was only after the poet Motiram Bhatt discovered Acharya’s works in 1887 and took them for printing in Varanasi that his works were published.
Acharya wrote several outstanding works in his life, which include Bhanubhaktiya Ramayana and a letter written to the Prime Minister in prison. He was sentenced to imprisonment for misleading. His health deteriorated in the prison and he was given the hope of release several times, but his case was not even heard. That is why he wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister requesting his release, which is currently considered one of his masterpieces.
