Continental Tires plans to introduce ContiSeal tyre technology in India, with the aim of addressing puncture-related issues and increasing tyre longevity. A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that tyre-related problems contribute to about 35% of accidents. Punctures are a common type of tyre damage in India, caused by sharp objects, bad road conditions, and other factors. In response to this, Continental Tires is considering introducing its ContiSeal technology, which offers immediate puncture sealing capabilities.

The ContiSeal technology automatically seals punctures from within, allowing the tyre to retain air and keep the vehicle mobile. It can repair tread damage up to 5 mm in diameter, effectively sealing approximately 80% of tyre punctures without affecting the driving experience. Samir Gupta, Managing Director of Continental Tires India, stated that this technology will help reduce accidents caused by punctures and provide freedom, especially to female drivers driving through isolated areas at night. He also emphasized the potential of ContiSeal to prolong tyre life, mitigating damage and increasing longevity.

While the technology is expected to be initially targeted at the four-wheeler segment, Continental Tires plans to evaluate its application in the two-wheeler segment. With all its capabilities, Continental tyres with ContiSeal technology are expected to be costly. However, Gupta expressed confidence that consumers are willing to pay for value-based products, and the technology will be well accepted. He also anticipates that the cost of ContiSeal technology will decrease over time, making it more accessible to consumers while maintaining its safety and performance benefits.

Continental Tires plans to engage with car clubs and opinion leaders to test batches of tyres equipped with ContiSeal and gather feedback on performance. This proactive approach aims to educate consumers about the technical features and benefits of the technology before its introduction in India. With these efforts, Continental Tires is poised to make a significant impact on the tyre industry in India, offering innovative solutions to common problems and enhancing overall driving experience.
