A unique group of women in Pakistan, known as the “Rowdy Riders,” are defying cultural norms by learning to ride motorbikes. Founded in 2017, the group has grown to over 1,500 members, including housewives, students, and professionals.

Led by instructor Zainab Safdar, the Rowdy Riders teach novices in Karachi everything from basic bike skills to navigating traffic. This initiative is a break from the norm in a country where women are typically restricted to the back seats of cars or riding side-saddle on motorbikes.

With a mission to empower women and promote gender equality, the Rowdy Riders are challenging misconceptions about women riding bikes. By providing women with the skills and confidence to navigate the city’s busy streets, the group is unlocking a new level of freedom for its members.

Despite facing challenges and seeking permission from families to participate, women like university lecturer Shafaq Zaman are inspired by the Rowdy Riders. Many members, like Zaman, are fulfilling lifelong dreams of riding bikes, showcasing their determination and resilience.

For 26-year-old Farwa Zaidi, the journey to mastering a bike has come with sacrifices and challenges, including multiple bone fractures. However, Zaidi and others view these obstacles as badges of honor, symbolizing their strength and determination to overcome barriers.

As more women in Pakistan embrace motorbiking, the Rowdy Riders are paving the way for a new era of female empowerment and independence. By learning to ride, these women are not only gaining new skills but also instilling a sense of confidence to conquer any challenge that comes their way.
