Yamaha’s new environmentally-friendly motorcycle strategy leans towards ethanol instead of electric vehicles

Yamaha India is shifting its focus to flex-fuel engine technology amidst the electric mobility trend in the Indian two-wheeler industry. This strategic move is aimed at cleaner emissions with ethanol-based flex fuels, as reported by Mint. Eishin Chihana, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India, emphasized the company’s holistic approach to greener mobility solutions.

Chihana highlighted Yamaha’s strategy of offering flex-fuel (E85) options for motorcycles to meet emissions targets and align with the global shift towards sustainable fuels. This decision allows the company to navigate the challenges of full electrification while contributing to the government’s cleaner mobility initiatives. The move towards ethanol-based flex fuels reflects Yamaha’s commitment to environmentally friendly technologies.

The announcement from Yamaha’s Chairman follows former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant’s call for full electrification in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments by 2030. Yamaha’s focus on ethanol-blended fuels as an alternative to pure electric propulsion indicates a conservative yet effective approach to achieving emission targets. The company anticipates electric scooters to capture 20 per cent of the market share by 2030, with the majority still relying on internal combustion engines.

Despite the increasing popularity of electric scooters driven by high petrol prices, Yamaha remains dedicated to enhancing its premium motorcycle dealership network. While the company plans to introduce two electric scooters by 2030, its main emphasis is on developing urban, sporty motorcycles for the younger generation. Yamaha’s long-term strategy includes expanding its premium motorcycle offerings and distribution network over the next six years, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
