Finfluencer Abhishek Kar Sparks Outrage with Misinformation About Assam; CID Action Ordered

Finfluencer Abhishek Kar has landed himself in a huge controversy for his clips from a YouTube podcast in which Kar was a guest. Kar has been indicted for spreading misinformation about the State of Assam and its people and the state government has directed the police to take action against him.

The Indian Express quoting Assam Police chief G P Singh reported that the state’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) has been asked to take action under different laws against Kar.

Abhishek Kar calls himself a financial influencer featured in a clip on a recent YouTube podcast in which Kar was the guest. The clip which was flagged by the Office of the Chief Minister on Friday evening was shared by several social media handles which were based in Assam.

A post on X by the official handle of the Chief Minister of Assam’s Office, tagging the Assam Police read,

“A video from a YouTube channel, named Riya Upreti, is in circulation where an individual named Abhishek Kar is seen making unacceptable comments on Assam’s history and traditions. Appropriate action may be initiated against the said individual for spreading misinformation,”

In the clip, Kar can be seen making a bizarre statement that he had heard that the women from Mayong village in Assam’s Morigaon district have the power to convert anyone into a goat or another animal and later turn you into a person again.

What followed was even irksome and offensive to many. Kar claimed that the person can indulge in sambhog or sexual acts. When he was asked about his beliefs, he said there are a lot of Tantric practices.

The Mayong region of Assam has been associated with mysticism and ‘magic’ practices but they are largely related to folk and traditional medicines.

Abhishek Kar also has his own YouTube channel which boasts 1.86 million subscribers and also has 2.9 million followers on Instagram. He mostly uploads content about advice on the stock market, trading, finance and business.

After the outcry, Abhishek Kar tendered his apologies for his offensive comments and stated that he never intended to hurt the sentiments of anyone. Kar also stated that he would do a thorough verification of any information before sharing it on social media.
