Adani Electricity Mumbai Tops Rating List of Discoms

New Delhi, March 11 (IANS) – Adani Electricity Mumbai has secured the top spot in India’s power distribution companies, as per the latest rating list released by the Union Power Ministry. The 12th Edition of Integrated Rating of Discoms evaluated 55 electricity distribution utilities and rated 12 companies with the highest ranking of A+.

Among the top rankings, Torrent Power Surat and Torrent Power Ahmedabad secured the second and third positions, followed by Gujarat’s state power utilities Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL) and Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL). Additionally, nine state-run power utilities from states like Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh earned a rating of either A+ or A.

During the release event at Shram Shakti Bhawan in Delhi, Union Power Minister R.K. Singh commended the Discoms for their improved performance and stressed the significance of ratings in informing the public and enhancing overall performance. He highlighted the reduction in AT&C losses and emphasized the importance of billing and collection efficiency.

Singh also addressed the issue of fluctuating power prices, attributing it to the lack of long-term power resource planning by some discoms. He emphasized the need for long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to reduce dependency on short-term purchases. The Minister also outlined penalties for load-shedding and consumer grievance redressal mechanisms to enhance accountability.

Key findings from the 12th Edition of the Integrated Rating of Discoms include improvements in AT&C losses, billing efficiency, and collection efficiency. The report also highlighted reductions in payables to generation and transmission companies and the disbursement of tariff subsidies by state governments. Additionally, the increase in power purchase costs and the ACS-ARR gap were identified as key challenges for the sector.

Overall, the ratings reflect the efforts made by various Discoms to enhance operational efficiency and customer service, while also underscoring the need for long-term sustainability and cost-effective power procurement strategies to ensure stability in the power sector.
