Jyothi Yarraji Breaks National 60m Hurdles Record, Clinches Gold at Asian Indoor Athletics Championships

Tehran, Feb 17 (IANS) – Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji made her mark at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 by breaking her own national record in the 60m hurdles and securing the gold medal on Saturday. Yarraji delivered an exceptional performance, clocking an impressive 8.12 seconds in the final, setting a new national record in the process.

Yarraji’s remarkable achievement marks the sixth time she has broken the 60-meter hurdles national record. She had previously set a national record last year with a time of 8.20 seconds and then continued to surpass it four more times, ultimately finishing in 8.13 seconds. Yarraji also emerged victorious in her heat earlier in the day, recording a time of 8.22 seconds. Her gold medal win at the championships comes after securing a silver medal in the previous edition, showcasing her continued excellence in the sport.

In addition to Yarraji’s outstanding performance, fellow Indian athlete Harmilan Bains also seized a gold medal in the 1500m final, finishing with a time of 4:29.55. Bains’ stellar performance set the stage for India’s strong presence on the track at the championships.

India’s overall performance at the championships exceeded last year’s results, with the country securing two gold medals on the first day. In the field events, Shaili Singh and Nayana James displayed their talent in the long jump final, securing fifth and sixth place, respectively, contributing valuable points to India’s total score.

As the competition continues, Indian athletes Ajay Kumar Saroj, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Dhanvir, and Tejas Shirse are set to compete in the evening session, representing the country in their respective events.
