Let us tell you about Aja Ekadashi 2021 Date, Tithi, Shubh Muhurat, Significance, Importance, Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi and More.

Aja Ekadashi Vrat Katha or Significance

Long ago there was a philanthropist and truthful king Harishchandra. King Harishchandra was so famous, truthful and pious, that even Indra, the king of the gods, became jealous of his fame. Indra instigated Maharishi Vishwamitra to take Harishchandra’s test. At the behest of Indra, Maharishi Vishwamitra ji showed King Harishchandra such a dream with the power of yoga that the king was donating all the kingdoms to the sage in a dream.

On the second day, Maharishi Vishwamitra came to Ayodhya and started asking for his kingdom. The king also accepted the donation made in the dream and gave the whole kingdom to Vishwamitra. Maharaj Harishchandra was the emperor of the whole earth. He donated his entire kingdom. Now considering it not proper to live in the donated land, he came to Kashi with his wife and son; Because it is described in the Puranas that Kashi is situated on the trident of Lord Shankar. Therefore, even though she is on the earth, she is considered separate from the earth.

When King Harishchandra started walking from Ayodhya, Vishwamitraji said – ‘Jap, penance, charity etc. are not successful without giving Dakshina. You have given such a huge kingdom, so give one thousand gold coins in its Dakshina. King Harishchandra did not even have a single coin of gold. Along with donating the kingdom, all the wealth of the state was automatically donated. He came to Kashi with a month’s time to pay Dakshina to the sage.

In Kashi, he sold his wife, Rani Shaivya, to a Brahmin. Prince Rohitashwa was a small child. On praying, the Brahmin ordered him to stay with his mother. King Harishchandra himself gave himself to a Chandala and thus gave one thousand coins to sage Vishwamitra as Dakshina. Maharani Shaivya now started working as a maidservant in the Brahmin’s house. Being a servant of the Chandal, King Harishchandra started guarding the crematorium.

The Chandala had entrusted the task of letting dead people burn after collecting taxes from the people who were brought there for burning. One day Gautam Rishi came towards the cremation ground, the king bowed to the sage Gautam Rishi said that this condition of you has happened due to the sin of some previous birth. If you observe fast on Bhadrapada Krishna Ekadashi and listen to the story of Aja Ekadashi fasting, then you will be saved from this condition.

Following the advice of the rishi Gautam, the king started fasting for Aja Ekadashi. One day, Prince Rohitashwa was picking flowers for the worship of a Brahmin when he was bitten by a snake. The snake’s venom spread instantly and Rohitashva fell to the ground after dying. There was no one to give patience to his mother Maharani Shaivyako nor was there anyone to take her son’s body to the crematorium. She reached the crematorium in the nighttime alone, carrying the body of the crying son in her hands.

She was going to burn the son’s body when Harishchandra came there and started asking for a tax on the crematorium. The poor queen did not even have a shroud to cover her son’s body. She recognized the king by voice and started pleading – ‘Maharaj! It is your own son who has died. I have nothing to pay. King Harishchandra felt very sad but he remained firm on his duty.

He said – Queen, I am the servant of the Chandal here. My master has told me that no one should burn the dead here without paying taxes. I cannot leave my duty. You burn the body of your son by giving me something. The queen started weeping bitterly and said – I have only this sari, which I am wearing, you take half of it. As soon as the queen went to tear her sari, in the same way, Lord Narayan, Indra, Dharmaraja etc. gods and Maharishi Vishwamitra appeared there.

Maharishi Vishwamitra told that Kumar Rohit is not dead. All this was done by the sage through Yoga Maya. The person who bought King Harishchandra was Dharmaraja in the form of a Chandala.
