Amazon Employees In Shock and Rage at the Unexpected Return-To-Office Policy

On Tuesday, Amazon staff members proceeded to express their displeasure with CEO Andy Jassy’s newly unveiled return-to-office edict, even bombarding an administrative website with remarks to that effect.

An internal petition and a Slack channel were set up by Amazon IT staff to protest the need that them to return to the workplace no less than three days per week starting on May 1. Only days after it was revealed, the mandate is being urged to be dropped by Jassy and the S-team at Amazon. Since then, the organization has gathered 16,000 participants, and as of Tuesday night, roughly 5,000 workers have endorsed the petition.

Employee resentment about the mandate manifested itself on Inside Amazon, the e-internal retailer’s news stream for staff, where they frequently remarked on a record of Jassy’s most recent all-hands session.

One individual, who requested anonymity as they were not permitted to speak to the media, claimed that workers started posting similar remarks after Amazon forbade employees from “liking” or responding to Jassy’s memo proclaiming the requirement to go back to work. Each comment reveals the identity and position of the poster within the business.

Employees who responded in the Slack channel claimed that the revelation surprised them. Several complained that to be closer to the business for commuting purposes, they might have to make plans for child care, hire elder care providers, or even move.

One worker welcomed Jassy to the Slack channel, which caused other workers to advise their coworkers to be cautious and refrain from stirring up too much commotion because it could result in the circuit being shut down by the business. To promote the petition, several employees are adding the word “Remote Advocacy” to their Slack statuses.

The petition not only expresses the signatories’ opposition to the mandate but also provides a variety of statistics and research demonstrating the advantages of remote employment, including increased productivity and the capacity to draw in and keep top talent. Jassy realized last week that inviting workers back to the office might present some difficulties.

As the Covid outbreak has subsided, numerous technology companies have returned to in-person labor. Since last year, Apple and Google have obliged some of their workers to come back to work, and Disney started forcing hybrid staff to work four days a week in January.
