Anmol Kharb emerged as the star player as the Indian women’s badminton team made history by winning the Badminton Asia Team Championships for the first time. The 17-year-old, ranked 472 in the world, secured a thrilling victory over 42nd-ranked Pornpicha Choeikeewong of Thailand in the deciding rubber, leading India to a 3-2 win in the final.
The Indian title charge began with two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu’s dominating performance against Supanida Katethong, which set the tone for the team’s historic win. Sindhu’s victory was followed by a stellar performance from the women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who caused an upset by defeating their higher-ranked Thai opponents.
Despite a brief setback in the second singles rubber, Anmol Kharb once again delivered in style and secured the deciding point for the Indian team, wrapping up the match with a 21-14, 21-9 victory over Choeikeewong.
