Anthony Mackie Responds to Captain America Controversy
Anthony Mackie was embroiled in a big controversy for his comments while promoting his forthcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World. Anthony Mackie is playing Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, in the film, which was produced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Mackie stated in a clip, which soon became viral on social media:
“To me, Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity—someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”
However, after a huge controversy, Mackie tried to clear the air and clarified on social media that he was a proud American. He stated that it was a compliment to play Captain America and take on the shield, which was held by a hero like Cap. Mackie also mentioned that he has the highest respect and regard for the people who have served America. He reiterated that Captain America is a character with universal appeal, endearing to people all over the world.
Mackie also added that the character of Captain America is synonymous with dependability, truthfulness, and nobility—characteristics that the whole world associates with America and what it stands for.
Mackie is making a comeback to the cinematic arena in a standalone film, playing the character of Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, which is set to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2025.
The controversy can be traced to the fact that the videos featuring Mackie’s comments did not include the questions he was answering. The clips were released by Marvel’s Italian social media account. However, the clips do not feature the sentence about the superhero not representing America.
The latest release of the franchise is the first Captain America film after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers passed the mantle to Mackie’s Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The earlier release, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which premiered in 2021, tackled the sensitive subject of a Black man donning the role of Captain America.
