It is written in 1 of the 18 Puranas, Padma Puran, that by taking vrat on this day, any person can get relief from the financial troubles, he has to face in his Future. In the Next Life, he will be born into a wealthy family and also earn wealth.
In ancient times, there was a virtuous king named Mahidhwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj was very cruel, unrighteous, and unjust. He used to hate his elder brother, Mahidhwaj. One Night Vajradhwaj killed his elder brother and buried his body under a Peepal tree. Due to this premature death, the king started living on the same Peepal tree as the soul and started doing different-different conflicts. One day suddenly a sage named Dhaumya from the front of the Peepal Tree. He saw Mahidhwaj’s soul and knew his past from his Powers. The reason for the demise was understood by him, due to his Powers.
The sage delighted the soul of Mahidhwaj from the Peepal tree descended from the peepal tree and preached him eschatology (Parlok Vidhya). The merciful sage himself fasted Apara (Achala) Ekadashi for liberation from the king’s soul and offered his virtuous soul to the Pret.. Due to the effect of this virtue, the king’s soul was freed from the form of a Pret Yoni. Giving thanks to the sage, wearing a divine body, Raja sat in a Pushpak plane and went to heaven.
