Armies continue to withdraw from eastern Ladakh, China removes bunkers, helipads

China built a helipad and temporary jetty on Finger 5 near the northern shore of Pangong So Lake last year. But now China is destroying these structures under the process of military disengagement.

There is some softening in the border dispute between India and China. The withdrawal process of Indian and Chinese forces from the northern and southern sides of Pangong So Lake in eastern Ladakh continues as planned. Indian Army teams are equipped with drones and cameras to keep an eye on the retreat of Chinese troops from Pangong Lake in East Ladakh.

Along with this, it is also being seen whether the Chinese army had built infrastructure like bunkers, temporary posts and whether it is being removed or not. On February 16, some pictures and videos related to disengagement were revealed.

The withdrawal of troops on both the northern and southern banks of Pangong Lake is expected to be completed by 20 February.

China built a helipad and temporary jetty on Finger 5 near the northern shore of Pangong So Lake last year. But now China is destroying these structures under the process of military disengagement.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) captured the Finger 4 area on the northern bank of Pangong Lake last year and changed the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). For now, according to the agreement between the Indian and Chinese military commanders, both sides will have to restore the situation back to their land in the same manner as before the deadlock began in May 2020.

Recently, the Defense Minister said in the Lok Sabha, “The agreement reached with China on disengagement in Pangong Lake area says that both sides will stop the deployment of the army in a phased, coordinated and verified manner.”

India keeps an eye on every action of China

The Indian Army team along with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) team will physically verify the troops’ retreat on Pangong Lake. A senior government official said, “It will be a joint inspection team from both the Indian Army and the Chinese PLA.”

The officer further said that the Indian Army teams will use high-resolution cameras as well as drones to monitor and record the process of army troops’ investigation and removal of military bases. These teams will specifically oversee the process of removing military bases set up near Pangong Lake by Chinese troops.

What was agreed in the agreement

The agreement states that the Chinese troops will return to Finger 8 and the Indian Army will return to the Dhan Singh Thapa post between Finger 2 and 3 on the north bank of Pangong Lake. In addition, there will be a temporary ban on military activities, including patrolling in traditional areas.

The nearby mountain in Pangong Lake is divided into several army units, called Fingers. The northern shore of the lake is divided into eight fingers. India has claimed its territory till Finger 8 and China is adamant on its claims up to Finger 4. This is the reason that the army of both the countries comes face to face in these areas many times and for the last few months, both the armies have been faced face in many places.

At eight kilometers on the northern shore of the lake, a regular face-to-face situation between the two armies between Finger 4 and Finger 8 has been created.
