History

Some believe that the festival came into the mainstream after the religion of Christianity was legalized in A.D. 313. Additionally, St. Athanasius, St. Irenaeus and Pope St. Victor I mentioned the festival of Lent during their ministries. The 40-day period of Lents is a period of separation of Lord Jesus of fasting and praying while in the desert. The name Ash Wednesday is taken from the practice along with words like, “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or the dictum “Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return.” For the festival, the ash is made by burning the palm leaves from last year’s Palm Sunday celebrations.
