EXPLAINED: Ashley Scoggin Files Lawsuit Over Relationship with Coach Chuck Love

Ashley Scoggin, the former Nebraska basketball player, and current UNLV player, has initiated a lawsuit against Nebraska Women’s Basketball head coach Amy Williams, Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts, the school’s Board of Regents, and former assistant coach Chuck Love in connection with a sexual relationship she had with the latter.

The lawsuit was instituted two years after Ashley Scoggin was removed from the Nebraska Women’s Basketball roster against the university.

Ashley Scoggin Lawsuit Explained

The lawsuit is centered on the sexual relationship that Ashley Scoggin had with Chuck Love while she was a player for the Cornhuskers Women’s Basketball.

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial in Lincoln for unspecified damages for the violation of her rights.

The lawsuit instituted against Nebraska’s athletic department alleges negligence on the part of the officials.

Amy Williams and Trev Alberts have been indicted for not taking appropriate actions when the sexual relationship between Ashley Scoggin and Chuck Love became public.

The lawsuit also alleges that no rules were framed for training staff members regarding sexual relationships with athletes.

The lack of rules created an environment where sexual misconduct was inevitable.

The civil lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court alleged that Chuck took a special interest in her and this eventually led to a sexual relationship.

Ashley Scoggin also alleged that she felt very insecure and feared adverse circumstances if she refused to engage in a relationship.

Maren Chaloupka, Scoggin’s attorney, said that it is a serious matter when predatory coaches force student-athletes into a sexual relationship. Coaches have enormous power which makes the students vulnerable, and this fact was common knowledge in 2022, yet the authorities did nothing.

It was the responsibility of the university to prevent any such misconduct by coaches, and if such incidents happen, the university must address them immediately.

Ashley Scoggin was expelled from the Nebraska women’s basketball team in February 2022 and is now a member of UNLV. Chuck Love has been suspended with pay by the athletic department, and he ultimately resigned from the position three months later.

In her two-season stint with the Cornhuskers, Ashley Scoggin played in 52 games with an average of 8.3 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game. She also had a field goal rate of 38.5% and a free throw rate of 86.8%.

Ashley Scoggin is playing her second season with the Rebels after her transfer to the program ahead of the 2022-23 college basketball seasons.
