Indian Athletes Shine at Asian Indoor Championships in Iran

Mumbai, Feb 17: Jyothi Yarraji, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, and Harmilan Bains made India proud by clinching three gold medals on the opening day of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran, Iran on Saturday.

Jyothi Yarraji set a new National Record in the women’s 60m hurdles, clocking 8.12 seconds. This victory comes after she had broken her own National Record in the Asian Championships at Astana, Kazakhstan in February 2023.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor also set a new National Record in the men’s shot put with an impressive effort of 19.72 metres. Toor’s historic achievement overshadowed the commendable performance of compatriot Dhanveer Singh, who finished fourth with a distance of 18.59 metres.

Harmilan Bains was the first Indian to clinch a gold medal in the women’s 1500m event, finishing with a time of 4:29.55.

Jyothi Yarraji has been a dominant force in the hurdles scene, breaking the national record six times. With her recent victory, she continues to solidify her position as a top athlete at both the national and continental levels.

In the field events, Shaili Singh and Nayana James secured fifth and sixth place in the long jump final, contributing valuable points to India’s overall tally.

The Indian contingent, consisting of 15 athletes, continues to make headlines at the 11th edition of the Asian Indoor Championships. While some athletes faced challenges, the overall performance has been commendable, setting a strong tone for the rest of the competition.

With their outstanding performances, the Indian athletes have set a high standard for the rest of the championships, showcasing their talent and determination on the international stage.
