Assessment of Waste Management Impact in Lucknow by CSIR-IITR

The CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR) in Lucknow offers to assess the ecological impact of treating 20 lakh tonnes of waste at the Shivri waste management site. The proposal includes chemical profiling, bio-remediation, and toxicological assessments using advanced techniques with the aim to enhance waste management practices.

The project will analyze waste for harmful substances pre and post-processing, monitor air pollution impact through quarterly sampling, and evaluate the safety of treated waste by studying its effects on earthworms and zebrafish. The goal is to understand and manage air pollutants, ensure the safety of treated waste, and restore the site for improved use.

The initiative by CSIR-IITR will address environmental, health, and economic concerns in legacy waste management, potentially serving as a blueprint for sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. Lucknow Municipal Corporation is considering the proposal, citing it as a step in the right direction for treating legacy waste.

“We are considering the proposal as it ensures the right steps in treating legacy waste,” said Additional municipal commissioner Arvind Rao. The plan involves rigorous analysis of wastewater, groundwater, and bio-soil to gauge pollution levels and expedite the natural breakdown process of waste for the well-being of workers and local communities’ health.
