Australia Secures Progression in AFC Qualification for FIFA World Cup Football

Australia has secured their place in the third round of AFC qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Lebanon 5-0 in Canberra. The Socceroos’ victory guarantees them a top-two finish in Group I and qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup as well.

In front of a record-breaking crowd of 25,023 at Canberra Stadium, the Socceroos took an early lead through striker Kusini Yengi in the second minute. Despite dominating the game, they only managed to extend their lead in the second half, scoring four more goals, including two from winger Craig Goodwin.

This win against Lebanon marks the Socceroos’ ninth victory in their last 11 matches and their ninth clean sheet in that period. Their next fixtures include matches against Bangladesh on June 6 and Palestine in Western Australia on June 11 to conclude their Group I campaign.
