Three Authors File Lawsuits Against Nvidia, Accusing It of Using Their Works to Improve AI Tool NeMo

In 2023, the OpenAI product, ChatGPT, was sued by authors including Sarah Silverman, who accused the artificial intelligence product of using their work to refine its language model without their permission.

It was expected that many authors would follow suit and slap lawsuits against AI products from other entities and the forecast was not baseless.

Nvidia Faces Legal Action from Authors Over Unauthorized Use of Books for NeMo AI

Nvidia, an American multinational company has now been slapped with a lawsuit by three authors—Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Stewart O’Nan who have accused its NeMo AI platform of using their copyrighted books without their authorization.

The three authors have indicted NeMo AI platform for using their works in perfecting NeMo’s training.

The training dataset has since been withdrawn after the accusation of copyright infringement first surfaced in October, 2023.

The three authors have said that 196,640 books which were original literary work were used to perfect a dataset which was then utilized to train NeMo to duplicate written language.

The 11-page long lawsuit, which is a class action suit, was filed on Friday night in San Francisco federal court.

The authors also alleged that the taking down of the dataset is a tacit acknowledgment that copyrighted content was used to perfect the AI tool and it constituted copyright infringement.

The proposed lawsuit also sought unspecified damages on behalf of the authors.

The lawsuit also names the literary works of the authors like “Last Night at the Lobster” by O’Nan and “Ghost Walk” by Keene.

Nvidia has maintained a silence so far, after the filing of the lawsuit. The author’s legal team has also not spoken.

Nvidia is another company which has been hit by a lawsuit for copyright infringement and using contents without authorization to perfect their AI language models.

OpenAI which created ChatGPT and its partner Microsoft have also been hit by lawsuits.

The New York Times has also filed a lawsuit alleging that its contents created in the last 130 years of its existence was being used by AI tools to perfect their language models.

Nvidia is however riding a wave of success with the increasing use of AI in every aspect of human existence.

Its stock prices have swelled by 600% and the total value of the company has reached $2.2 trillion. The chip making company which is based in Santa Clara has become a formidable player in the AI sector.
