Azerbaijan prepares to reopen embassy in Iran

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran, Iran, will soon resume operations after successful agreements between Iran and Azerbaijan. Official meetings and the appointment of a new ambassador are on the agenda to strengthen bilateral relations following the embassy’s closure due to an armed attack in 2023.
An anonymous official from the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated, “Good agreements have been reached between Iran and Azerbaijan in line with increasing (diplomatic) movements in bilateral relations.” The reopening of the embassy and official meetings are part of the efforts to enhance ties between the two countries, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Following an armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran on January 27, 2023, which resulted in the death of a staff member and injuries to two others, Azerbaijan decided to shut down its embassy in Iran. While Baku labeled the attack as an “act of terror,” Tehran’s investigations revealed that the assailant had “personal and family-related” motives, leading to a temporary strain in relations.
In an attempt to restore diplomatic relations, Iran will dispatch a new ambassador to Azerbaijan as the previous ambassador’s term has ended. Both countries have engaged in diplomatic efforts over the past months to rebuild their relationship, signifying a positive step forward in their bilateral ties.
