Bajaj Auto speeds up launch of CNG motorcycle, set to arrive next quarter

Bajaj Auto has fast-tracked the development of a CNG-powered motorcycle, moving the launch timeline up by a year. Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director – Bajaj Auto, confirmed that the world’s first CNG motorcycle could arrive in the next quarter between April and June 2024.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Bajaj stated that the CNG motorcycle aims to reduce running costs and emissions. The company foresees it having a similar impact as Hero Honda did by halving fuel costs. This move aligns with Bajaj’s plans to introduce a premium new brand in FY25 for its CNG motorcycle lineup.

The CNG prototype has shown promising results with a 50-65% reduction in fuel and operating costs, as well as significantly lower emission levels compared to traditional ICE vehicles. Details about the upcoming CNG motorcycle remain under wraps, with a focus on packaging and safety measures for the new technology.

Bajaj hinted at launching multiple CNG bikes in the future, targeting the mass market with displacements between 100-160 cc. The manufacturer’s strong presence in the 125+ cc segment suggests the maiden CNG offering could be a 125 cc motorcycle, balancing performance and efficiency. More information is expected in the first quarter of FY2025.

In addition to the CNG motorcycle, Bajaj Auto is also working on releasing its largest Pulsar model yet, rumored to be a 400 cc variant. The launch of the Bajaj Pulsar 400 has been delayed to around April this year. Stay tuned for further updates on this highly anticipated model in the coming weeks.
