Beijing to Host World Athletics Championships in 2027

Beijing to Host 2027 World Athletics Championships

Beijing has been selected as the host city for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, as confirmed by the global governing body of the sport. The decision was made at the 234th World Athletics Council Meeting in Glasgow, with the event set to take place 12 years after the Chinese capital’s successful staging of athletics’ flagship event.

The upcoming championships will bring back the sport’s biggest stars to Beijing, almost two decades after the city hosted the Beijing Olympic Games. China will also host next year’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, showcasing its commitment to athletics.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed his excitement about Beijing hosting the event, stating, “With a population of more than 1.4 billion, China is one of the biggest sports markets in the world.” He highlighted the potential for growing the sport and fan base in China, following the success of the Wanda Diamond League broadcast in the country.

Wang Nan, World Athletics Council Member and Vice President of the Chinese Athletics Association, thanked World Athletics for the recognition and trust in China and Beijing. The Chinese Athletics Association is determined to work together with the Beijing organizing committee to ensure the championships are of the highest quality standard and contribute to the global development of athletics.

The previous edition of the World Athletics Championships took place in Budapest, and Tokyo is set to host the event in 2025. With China now confirmed as the next host, the last four World Athletics Championships have been awarded to the world’s four largest economies – the USA, the EU, Japan, and now China.
