Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a high-profile visit to the US.
The Israeli PM’s visit was marked by protests, and one of the protests was led by the LGBTQ+ community who held placards reading “Gays for Gaza” and similar messages.
Netanyahu in his speech mocked the demonstrators, saying that “Gays for Gaza” were like “chickens for KFC.”
What does Benjamin Netanyahu mean by comparing “Gays for Gaza” to “chickens for KFC”?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his speech to the U.S. Congress on July 24, 2024, mocked the queer pro-Palestinian protesters and likened them to chickens who support the fast-food chain restaurant Kentucky Fried Chicken, better known as KFC.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was stressing the fact that LGBTQ+ communities are subjugated by the ruling party in Gaza (Hamas).
He further added that the queer communities are also oppressed by the leaders and governments of other Palestinian territories and nations that support Palestine.
Hence, the queer community must not oppose Israel in the violent conflict that has been unfolding in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
Supporters of the Israeli Government claim that if any person from the queer community were to enter Gaza, they are going to suffer the same fate as a chicken that might walk into the processing factory of a KFC supplier.
Netanyahu, in his speech, added,
“People who protest with these killers … You have Gays for Gaza. That’s an absurdity if I’ve ever heard one. If you are gay in Gaza, you’ll be shot in the back of the head. Women for Gaza. What are women in Gaza — they’re chattel and other such absurdities.”
However, many queer Palestinians and other experts reject this contention although Hamas, the political and military organization governing parts of the Gaza Strip, is anti-LGBTQ and does little to stop homophobic violence.
However, they contend that Hamas does not represent all Palestinians and has not been elected to govern Gaza.
The term “chickens for KFC” first surfaced as a meme on social media in a post by Twitter user @TwittiKat.
It was captioned with a photo of what appears to be two men carrying a banner reading “Women for Mitt,”.
This was in reference to the Mitt Romney campaign against former President Barack Obama.
The account joked that the Romney supporters were “closely affiliated with Chickens for KFC and Oceans for British Petroleum.”
In other words, the meme highlighted the fact that the queer community is more likely to be impacted by the president of their own country than an organization in a far-away nation they do not live in.
‘Chickens For KFC’ is much akin to several similar phrases like “Africans for Colonialism,” “Polar Bears for Fossil Fuels,” “Gays for Trump.”
