Bihar Diwas, also known as Bihar Foundation Day, is celebrated every year on 22 March. This day is an opportunity to remember the historical, cultural and social heritage of Bihar and celebrate the prosperity, development and achievements of the state. Here the Kalkal stream of Ganga irrigated civilization, here Buddha got knowledge, Mahavira got the path of salvation and Mahatma Gandhi has the power of his satyagraha. This region is not only historically important, but also a special place spiritually.
Bihar was formed on 22 March 1912. It was separated from the province of Bengal and made a new state. This region was known as ‘Vihara’ or ‘Viharak’ in the Vedic period, which means ‘land of monasteries’. This day holds a special significance for the people of Bihar. Bihar Day is the day to inspire people of Bihar for their cultural heritage, education, art, literature and struggle.
Bihar has made many significant contributions in Indian history. Here in Bodh Gaya, Lord Buddha attained knowledge, Nalanda University was called knowledge center in ancient times. Apart from this, Bihar is also known for great emperors like Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka. Emperor Ashoka, known as a symbol of peace and non -violence in the world, also ruled from here. During his reign, Buddhism spread widely and Bihar became the center of Buddhist education.
The diversity of folk art, music, dance and food is also celebrated on this occasion. The celebration of Bihar Diwas inspires us to contribute to unity, cooperation and development of the state. The major festivals here include Chhath Puja, Makar Sankranti, Holi, and Dussehra. Chhath Puja is especially famous for the worship of Sun God and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
