BJP aims for a repeat victory in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada LS seat
Bengaluru, April 5 (IANS) Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha Seat in Karnataka is known as a stronghold of the BJP, with the party maintaining its winning streak since 1991. The parliamentary seat in the coastal part of the state holds great importance due to its numerous Hindu pilgrimage centres.
The BJP has surprised many by denying a ticket to three-time parliamentarian Nalin Kumar Kateel and instead opting for a fresh face, Captain Brijesh Chowta, an ex-serviceman and loyal party worker. On the other hand, the Congress has fielded R. Padmaraj, an advocate from Mangaluru city.
Captain Chowta, belonging to the influential Bunt community, has deep roots in the RSS and BJP. Meanwhile, Padmaraj, representing the dominant Billava community, is hoping to make a mark with the Congress party. The decision to field Padmaraj was made after Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader declined the offer.
With the upcoming election, the Congress party is strategizing by focusing on Padmaraj’s candidacy, emphasizing his potential to secure victory. However, sources indicate that caste politics might not play a significant role in the region, unlike other parts of Karnataka.
The past few years have seen tensions in the region, particularly the murder of BJP youth leader Praveen Kumar Nettaru during the hijab controversy, leading to communal clashes. The involvement of the Popular Front of India (PFI) in Nettaru’s murder added to the unrest, prompting further investigations by the NIA.
The political landscape in Dakshina Kannada remains challenging, with the BJP maintaining a strong presence. In the 2019 general elections, sitting MP Kateel secured a massive victory over his Congress rival. The constituency comprises various Assembly segments, with a mixed history of BJP and Congress victories.
