Kolkata, March 19 (IANS) The BJP has lodged a complaint against Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim for violating the Model Code of Conduct by announcing compensation for those affected by a building collapse in Garden Reach. The incident left nine people dead and 12 injured.
Mayor Hakim, also the Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister, announced compensation of Rs 500,000 for kin of the deceased and Rs 100,000 for the injured during his visit to the accident spot.
BJP leader Sisir Bajoria filed the complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, and the Chief Electoral Office, West Bengal, accusing the mayor of MCC violation for making the compensation announcement.
Senior BJP leader Rakesh Kumar Singh claimed to have alerted authorities about illegal constructions in the area two years ago, stating that the tragedy in Garden Reach is just the beginning and minor earthquakes could lead to more collapses.
“I sent letters in 2022 to various authorities about illegal constructions. What happened in Garden Reach is just the tip of the iceberg. Even a minor earthquake can lead to the collapse of several buildings in the area,” Singh stated.
