Bobrisky Released from Prison After Serving Four Months; Advises Nigerians to Respect Currency Laws

Controversial socialite, brand influencer, and self-proclaimed fashion icon Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, who was arrested on April 4, 2024, and sentenced to 6 months in prison, is finally free.

The 31-year-old popular Nigerian cross-dresser served 4 out of the 6 months of his sentence after being found guilty.

Bobrisky Freed After Four Months in Prison

The news has been confirmed by the EFCC in a statement on their Instagram page.

The popular socialite was jailed after a video surfaced in which Bobrisky was seen spraying and flaunting wads of new naira notes at the premiere of the film “Beasts of Two Worlds” on March 24, 2024.

Immediately after the release, the flamboyant brand influencer had advice for his fellow countrymen – never mishandle their currency notes, or they could find themselves in jail just as the influencer did for such non-violent crimes.

The cross-dresser said during a press interview:

“Don’t spray money unless you want to be a landlord inside Kirikiri. It’s not just about killing or any criminal activity; something light like this can take you there.”

He added,

“I’m only focusing on my friends who were there for me, and I’m grateful. I’m not thinking about any other person.”

Okuneye was slapped with charges of naira abuse by the EFCC on four counts, and he pleaded guilty before Justice A.O. Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Despite being transgender, Justice A.O. Awogboro ordered that he spend the prison term in a male prison. Transgenders for years have claimed to be a woman.

Throwing currency in the air is a part of Nigerian custom, especially on occasions such as weddings and celebrations.

Technically, it is considered an offence since the currency can fall to the ground where it can be trampled upon before being picked up by the celebrant’s team.

The influencer said during his trial that he was aware of the ban.

To date, it has been rare for people to be prosecuted for it.

Bobrisky, since his release, has been celebrating and sharing his celebrations on social media.

The internet has also reacted.

One user posted: “Obey the laws!”

Another tweeted: “Let the celebrations begin!”

Some users also noted the weight Bobrisky had allegedly gained while in prison.

@benjamin_cherish_ commented: “We are adding weight; he came out with a full face beat and perfectly laid edges. My baby.”

And @boboafrica1 said: “Bob gained weight? That’s so mother.”
