Borja’s goal propels River Plate towards quarterfinals in Argentina’s Primera Division
Buenos Aires, April 8 (IANS) Colombian striker Miguel Borja led River Plate to a 2-1 victory over Rosario Central, boosting their chances of reaching the Primera Division quarterfinals. Lautaro Giaccone scored first for the visitors, but Borja’s two goals secured the win for his team.
In the 14th minute, Giaccone scored for Rosario Central, only to be cancelled out by Borja’s equalizer just after the hour mark. Borja then secured the win for River Plate with a goal three minutes from time, moving them closer to the quarterfinals.
With this win, River Plate now sits third in Group A with 24 points, one behind leaders Argentinos Juniors. A draw in their final match will secure their spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Rosario Central is in 10th place, 10 points behind.
“We knew that if we won we would control our own destiny and that’s now the case,” Borja told reporters after the match. His 11 goals in 10 appearances make him the top scorer in the Primera Division this season for River Plate.
In other matches, Atletico Tucuman, Barracas Central, and Racing Club also secured victories on Sunday. This win puts River Plate in a strong position as they look ahead to the playoffs with confidence.
