As the diplomatic tensions worsen between the Maldives and India, Indians in the social media platforms have created abuzz with #BoycottMaldives. Many Indian tourists have canceled their vacations planned to the Maldives amid the growing diplomatic row with #BoycottMaldives. The origin of the controversy can be traced when a minister of the picturesque island nation wrote in a tweet about emphasising Maldives’ stance on beach tourism accusing India of targetting the picturesque island nation.

The multiple social media platforms are overloaded with the hashtag ‘#BoycottMaldives.’ It has exacerbated the existing tensions between India and the Island nation.
Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of Maldives also denigrated the Maldivian Minister’s comments on the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi in X, formerly Twitter, posting, “What appalling language by Maldives Government official @shiuna_m towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity. @MMuizzu gov must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy.”
Involvement of Indian Citizens
Citizens from all corners of the Indian sub-continent have been highly provoked by the insulting tweet by the Maldives minister. Thus, Indians went to social media and shared extensive screenshots showcasing their canceled hotel bookings for future vacations along with flights to the Maldives. Following this diplomatic storm between the two nations, hundreds and thousands of Indians along with various public personalities including celebrities, cricketers and more have canceled all sorts of upcoming trips to Maldives with #BoycottMaldives.
Moreover, Indian celebrities including Shraddha Kapoor, John Abraham, Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Adar Poonawalla have requested Indians to cancel their Maldives trips and rather explore the islands of India. Thousands of lakhs of posts are flooding Twitter with Hashtags such as #BoycottMaldives, #Lakshadweep, and #ExploreIndianIslands. Reportedly these hashtags have garnered more than three lakh posts on Twitter by the night of Sunday.
Indian Government’s Involvement
However, no endorsement could be witnessed from the Indian government on the hashtag campaign officially. It clearly shows thousands and lakhs of Indians have expressed their discontentment with the Maldives showcasing the power of social media.
