Brothers’ company group approved by Union Cabinet for semiconductor fab units
Chennai, Feb 29 (IANS) – The Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of semiconductor units by three companies, all headed by brothers N. Chandrasekaran and N. Srinivasan. Tata Electronics, Tata Semiconductor Assembly, and CG Power are the companies involved in this major development.
Tata Electronics Private Ltd, in partnership with PSMC, Taiwan, will establish a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore. The plant will produce high-performance compute chips for various sectors, including electric vehicles, telecom, and defense.
Additionally, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, at a cost of Rs 27,000 crore. The plant will focus on developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies for a range of applications.
On the other hand, CG Power, in collaboration with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, will establish a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore. The facility will cater to consumer, industrial, automotive, and power sectors.
The approval for these semiconductor units indicates a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing in India. The investments made by these companies will not only boost the domestic manufacturing sector but also help in reducing dependency on imports for critical technology components.
