Cabinet Greenlights Chip F ab Plant in Gujarat by Tata Group and Taiwan’s PSMC

New Delhi, Feb 29 (IANS) – The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of chip fabrication plants by Tata Group and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) in Dholera district, Gujarat. This move aims to boost India’s semiconductor industry and achieve the goal of becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing.

According to Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tata JV will set up India’s first semiconductor fab with a capacity of 50,000 wafers per month. Additionally, the Cabinet also gave the green light for Tata Semiconductor Assembly Test’s assembly and testing unit in Assam, with an investment of approximately Rs 27,000 crore.

Earlier this month, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced that Assam will soon house its first-ever semiconductor packaging plant, a joint venture between the state government and Tata Group. The semiconductor sector in India has witnessed investment proposals worth over Rs 2.5 lakh crore, covering packaging, design, and research and development activities.

In September last year, US-based Micron Technology initiated the construction of a Rs 22,500 crore facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor journey. With these developments, the country is poised to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor market and attract further investments.
