Calcutta HC seeks reports on violence in Sandeshkhali during Bengal panchayat polls

Kolkata, Feb 23 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal state government to provide details of complaints of violence during the panchayat polls in Sandeshkhali. Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam asked for information on a specific case of poll violence in the area.

The Division Bench, headed by Chief Justice Sivagnanam, instructed the state government to submit the details of the case and the petitioner involved. The ongoing tension in Sandeshkhali, which has been unsettled for nearly 15 days, was the focal point of the court hearing.

The court scheduled another hearing on February 26, during which the state government must present the specifics of the poll violence from last year in Sandeshkhali. Additionally, a group of lawyers requested permission from Justice Kausik Chanda to visit the area under current prohibitory orders.

Justice Chanda advised the lawyers to seek approval from the state government and wait for 48 hours. Only if permission is not granted within that time frame, will the court accept the petition. The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense as legal proceedings continue.
