Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay announces resignation

Kolkata, March 3 (IANS) Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a Calcutta High Court judge, has announced his resignation on Tuesday. Justice Gangopadhyay, known for handling sensitive cases like the cash-for-school job case, will step into a “larger sphere” of activities.

In an interview with a vernacular channel, Justice Gangopadhyay stated that he would send his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. He also mentioned his willingness to consider joining a political party if nominated. Scheduled to retire in August 2024, he is currently presiding over cases related to labour affairs and industrial relations.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation in the state, Justice Gangopadhyay launched a scathing attack against the ruling Trinamool Congress, citing alleged corruption charges. He criticized the state’s governance, calling it a “rule of theft and loot” that he cannot accept as a Bengali, leading to his decision to resign.

Justice Gangopadhyay thanked the ruling party for the challenge they presented to him, further emphasizing his belief that the current rulers of the state are not working in the best interest of the people. His decision to resign was influenced by the challenging circumstances posed by the ruling dispensation, prompting him to take a stand against the prevailing conditions.

As Justice Gangopadhyay prepares to resign from his position, his departure marks a significant shift in the legal landscape of Kolkata. With his impending exit, the high court will see changes in its judicial proceedings, as he leaves behind a legacy of fighting against corruption and injustice in the state.
