California Lutheran University (CLU) was established in 1959 to help people to find their purpose in life. The university offers different majors in the liberal arts and sciences and professional fields. It has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and two of its schools are accredited by California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools. The university is a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and a few other associations.
In 1963, the Community Leaders Club was established to bring the town and college closer together. The group conducted annual auctions, staged events, assisted athletic programs, etc. and half of its faculty held doctoral degrees by the early 1970s.
California Lutheran University has its main campus in Thousand Oaks, California, which is between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. The Outdoor Recreation program allows students to experience hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities. The university also has four satellite centers in Oxnard, Santa Maria, Westlake Village, and Woodland Hills.
