Call for CBI probe into veterinary student’s death by Kerala’s Leader of Opposition and BJP

Thiruvananthapuram, March 3 (IANS) – Kerala’s Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheeshan has called for a CBI investigation into the death of J.S. Siddharth, a second-year student of Veterinary Science at the Pookode Government Veterinary College in Wayanad. Siddharth was found hanging in his hostel room on February 18, prompting concerns of foul play.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Satheeshan highlighted the need for a CBI probe, citing fears that the police investigation could be compromised due to alleged threats by senior leaders of the ruling CPI-M. Siddharth’s family has also demanded a CBI inquiry, raising suspicions about the circumstances of his death.

The BJP has joined the chorus for a CBI investigation, with party leader Suresh Gopi, a prominent Malayalam actor and candidate for the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat, backing the call after meeting Siddharth’s family. The deceased student’s father, Jayaprakash, has vehemently denied any possibility of suicide, claiming that his son was killed by SFI students at the college. Several SFI members, including the college unit President and Secretary, are currently in police custody.

In response to the growing concerns, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan removed Vice Chancellor Prof M.R. Saseendranathan from his position, while state minister J.Chinchurani suspended college dean Dr M.K. Narayanan, who is under scrutiny for allegedly supporting the SFI students. The autopsy report revealed multiple injuries on Siddharth’s body, a fractured jawbone, and signs of starvation and dehydration prior to his death, suggesting possible torture.

The tragic death of Siddharth has raised serious questions about the safety and security of students at the Pookode Government Veterinary College. The demand for a CBI investigation underscores the need for transparency and accountability in uncovering the truth behind this disturbing incident.
