Ceasefire negotiations stalled as Hamas rejects release of 40 Israeli hostages

The Cairo indirect peace talks between Israel and Hamas have hit a roadblock after Hamas refused to release 40 hostages as demanded by Israel. Hamas cited the unavailability of women and elderly hostages, while Israel insisted on their release for further ceasefire talks to proceed.

According to sources in Israel’s defence ministry, Hamas informed mediators that reaching the figure of 40 hostages would be difficult. They expressed reluctance to include healthy male hostages in the release, a proposal that was not acceptable to Israel.

The division within Hamas leadership is evident, with the political bureau led by Ismael Haniyeh in favor of an immediate ceasefire, while the military side headed by Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif pushing for a hard bargain or complete withdrawal of Israeli military from Gaza.

The conflicting positions within Hamas leadership have repeatedly caused the mediatory talks to fail, as revealed by sources in Israel’s war cabinet and defence ministry. Despite efforts from Qatar and Egyptian leaders, the deadlock remains unresolved, jeopardizing the ceasefire negotiations.
