Cedars-Sinai Investigators Develop AI Tool, Which Can Predict Heart Attack

In a major breakthrough for heart health, Investigators at Cedars-Sinai, a Los Angeles-based healthcare organization, have developed an AI-enabled tool that can predict a person’s heart attack.

In an article published in The Lancet, the weekly medical journal, the device is described in-depth, saying it can accurately predict a person with a heart attack in the coming five years, on the basis of the amount and composition of plaque in the arteries.

According to myoclinic.org, A heart attack occurs when arteries stop supplying blood to your heart and oxygen. Heavy depositions build up over duration, constructing plaques in your heart’s arteries.

If a plaque buildup, a blood clot can form and choke your arteries, provoking a heart attack.

The coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) medical test takes 3D images of the heart and arteries allowing doctors to determine how much a patient’s blood has been restricted by narrowing or blockages.

“Coronary plaque is often not measured because there is not a fully automated way to do it,” said senior author of the study and Ph.D., director of the quantitative image analysis lab at Cedars-Sinai, Damini Dey.

“It takes 25 to 30 minutes for doctors or experts to measure it, but with this AI-enabled tool, one can measure plaque from CTA images in just 5-6 seconds.” She added.

Notably, The researchers examined 1,196 people’s CTA tests from 11 different locations in Australia, Germany, Japan, Scotland, and the United States.

They then taught an AI algorithm to measure plaque by using coronary CTA images from 921 people who had already been examined by specialists.

The study also matched the results with images taken from two invasive tests that are considered to be very accurate in evaluating coronary artery plaque and narrowing: intravascular ultrasound and catheter-based coronary angiography.
