Centre approves allocation of Rs 2,093 crore for highway and ropeway projects in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi, March 8 (IANS): The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has revealed that an allocation of Rs 2,093.92 crore has been sanctioned for widening two highways and a ropeway project in Jammu and Kashmir. This includes an outlay of Rs 1404.94 crore for the Rafiabad – Kupwara – Chowkibal – Tangdhar – Chamkot section of National Highway-701, aimed at enhancing logistics and promoting tourism in the region.

Under Project Beacon, the initiative in Baramulla and Kupwara districts will transform a 51 km route into two lanes, facilitating better connectivity between Baramulla and Kupwara districts. Minister Gadkari emphasized the critical role this highway plays in the strategic route near the International Border, essential for the development of tourism in North Kashmir.

Furthermore, an allocation of Rs 126.58 crore has been approved for the development of a 1.5 km ropeway from SDA Parking to Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar. Operating on the Hybrid Annuity Model, this project utilizes monocable detachable gondola technology to offer a scenic view of Srinagar city and Dal Lake, along with providing convenient transportation options for visitors, including individuals with disabilities and senior citizens.

Moreover, a sum of Rs 562.40 crore has been sanctioned for the upgradation and strengthening of the Nashri- Chenani section of National Highway-244. Spanning across Udhampur and Ramban districts, this project aims to enhance connectivity to Patnitop, a popular tourist destination in Jammu, thus boosting economic development in the region.

The initiatives announced by Minister Gadkari highlight the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, promoting tourism, and creating employment opportunities for the local population. These projects are expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, while also ensuring safe and eco-friendly transportation options for visitors and residents alike.
