Chandigarh University Emerges as Overall Champions at KIUG 2023; Pratyasa Ray Shines as Top Athlete
Chandigarh University emerged as the champions of the 4th Khelo India University Games 2023, Ashtalakshmi, with an impressive tally of 71 medals, including 32 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze. The games, which began on February 17, concluded with a grand ceremony at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati, Assam.
The boxers from Chandigarh University shone bright, securing five gold, one silver, and four bronze medals to cement their position at the top of the leaderboard. The outstanding performances of Vikash, Harsh, Deepak, Priya, and Pranjal in their respective weight categories helped the university clinch the overall championship title for the first time in four editions.
Lovely Professional University and Guru Nanak Dev University followed in second and third place respectively, with notable medal tallies. Defending champions Panjab University staged a late comeback in the boxing competitions, finishing fourth overall with a commendable track record.
Chandigarh University’s remarkable success across various sports disciplines like wrestling, athletics, weightlifting, swimming, fencing, kabaddi, rugby, judo, and badminton underscored their overall dominance in the games. The university’s strategic changes in sports policy, including increased incentives for athletes, have significantly contributed to their meteoric rise in the rankings.
Swimmer Pratyasa Ray of Utkal University and Xavier Michael Dsouza of Jain University were applauded as the most successful female and male athletes of the games. Moreover, five new Games records were set in athletics, showcasing the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of the participants from across the country.
The 4th Khelo India University Games 2023 in Guwahati not only celebrated the triumph of sporting excellence but also highlighted the dedication and hard work of the student-athletes who competed with passion and determination. The closing ceremony, graced by Assam sports minister Nandita Gorlosa, marked the end of a thrilling and memorable sporting extravaganza.
