Chaudhary Charan Singh: The Farmer’s Leader of India

Lucknow, March 30 (IANS) – Chaudhary Charan Singh, known as a farmer leader, relentlessly fought for farmers’ issues. Born on December 23, 1902, in Meerut, he served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and as the Prime Minister of India. His legacy continues to inspire.

A Congress member, Singh formed the first non-Congress government in Uttar Pradesh. Deeply influenced by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, he joined the freedom movement and was jailed multiple times. He piloted pro-farmer legislation and advocated ownership rights for farmers.

Singh, who authored a book on Indian etiquette, passed away on May 29, 1987, at the age of 84. His birth anniversary, December 23, is celebrated as ‘Kisan Diwas’. His political legacy lives on through his grandson, Jayant Chaudhary, who now leads the Rashtriya Lok Dal party.

The non-Congress government in UP under Charan Singh was the first in northern India. He introduced key land reforms empowering farmers and establishing Minimum Support Price. His dedication to farmers’ welfare and commitment to agriculture remain unmatched.
