Chess Champions from India scramble for visas as Canada delays for Candidates Tournament

MUMBAI, Mar 2 (IANS) – Five Indian chess players are facing uncertainty over their participation in the qualifying tournament for the World Championships in Canada as they have not yet received their visas. The International Chess Federation, FIDE, has made an urgent appeal to the Canadian government with a month left for the event.

R. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, D. Gukesh, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Koneru Humpy are the Indian players set to participate in the FIDE Candidates Tournament in Toronto from April 3-22. FIDE has expressed concerns about the timely arrival of the players as the event draws near.

FIDE issued a statement late on Friday night, highlighting that players from various countries worldwide, including India, have not received updates on their visa status. The federation has urged the Canadian government to address the issue promptly to ensure the success and integrity of the tournament.

The FIDE Candidates Tournament is considered one of the most prestigious events in chess and is being held in Canada for the first time. With only a month left until the tournament begins, there are growing concerns about the players’ ability to reach Toronto on time for the competition.
