Chopped Chin Meme; The Viral Trend of 2025 Sparks Laughter, Music, and a Challenge from Angel Wiley

Recently, a meme that has become viral on social media, especially Instagram, has been titled Chopped Chin memes. The meme has earned the distinction of being labelled the first meme of 2025.

The birth of the whole saga of Chopped Chin memes can be traced to August 2023 when the WNBA team Atlanta Dream shared a video of basketball star Renee Montgomery grooving with her cousin Angel Wiley. The video became viral when it was posted, but the meme fest did not start until December 2024 when an Instagram user @halal_man_2 began making memes using the video.

The trend went viral in a very short time and was seen in everyone’s Instagram Reels algorithm.

Now, coming to the title of the video, Chopped Chin: how did the viral trend get this name? In internet lingo, Chopped is a term used to denote something unusual or even unsightly. The Chopped Chin was just an indication of the sharp features of Montgomery’s cousin in the video, Angel Wiley. @halal_man_2’s account on Instagram was also referred to by the same name.

The phrase Chopped Chin is also used to refer to several clones of the same name, and a few examples include choppedchinfan, which shared the same template of memes with the same video.

When Chopped Chin Guy Angel Wiley Spoke

After the video featuring him became a meme and a viral trend on January 3, Angel Wiley himself came out to talk about how he felt about the whole episode.

“You know who I am. I see them. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not gonna lie to you, okay? The group chats, I see it all, okay? I’m not a liar. Do the dance, do the dance, do the dance — do the nod, do the nod — No,” Wiley said.

Several netizens even asked him to recreate the dance and the catchy nod in the original video. Wiley did not say no but mentioned that he would not recreate the dance until his upcoming EP, Algorithm, reached a certain number of streams.

Wiley added:

“But I will do it under one condition. I am about to drop an EP called Algorithm. Four songs. Four songs that need a combined 21K streams, and I will do the dance. Simple. I will do the nod, I will do the dance. Until then, I will not acknowledge it at all. You don’t even know if I will see it.”
