Choti Diwali, also referred to as Narak Chaturdashi, Yam Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas, falls on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, as per the Hindu calendar. This festival is followed by Diwali and, in fact, forms an essential part of the five-day festival of Deepotsav. The main purpose of this day is to worship Yamraj, the god of death, and worship Lord Krishna, so that the fear of untimely death ends and beauty, age, and strength can be attained.
The religious importance of this day is with the killing of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. According to the legend, Narakasura had imprisoned 16,000 women, which were freed by Lord Krishna on this day. That’s why he is worshiped on this day, and also a practice exists of lightening a lamp in Yamraj’s name called ‘Yam Deep’. This is kept outside the house, in the south direction. It is thought that through such an act, Yamraj will be pleased with that family, and then that family need not fear the untimely death.
The day is also being celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti because people believe this to be the birthday of Lord Hanuman. This day, people worship Hanuman ji and seek his blessings.
During the Roop Chaudas day, people bathe before sunrise to worship the Lord Krishna. People massage their body with sesame oil during the bath with a special plant called Apamarg. The evil coming over the head is considered removed by passing the said plant. These rituals prove beneficial in beauty and health also.
On Choti Diwali, houses, shops, and other places are cleaned and decorated with flowers and lamps. In the evening, a four-faced lamp is lit at the main door, which is made of flour. This is said to ward off evil forces and bring prosperity. People visit their relatives and friends and distribute sweets and wish them Happy Diwali on this day.
Chhoti Diwali will be on October 30 in the year 2024, but Chaturdashi date would run from 1:16 pm on October 30 to 3:53 pm on October 31. This festival is mainly celebrated in the evening.
